Necessary tools can act as distractions and timewasters for bloggers, especially for the newbie bloggers. These five distractions not only waste much time, but also prick the morale of the bloggers.
1. Readership statistics
This week I have only 42 visitors. Last week I had 57. Where have 15 readers gone? Looking over at the blog statistics can take 30-120 minutes/day, even if you have only a few readers. Spending more than 5 minutes a week analyzing traffic statistics is a waste of time.
2. Adsense click count
Bloggers feel worried when they see their Adsense revenue taking a big dip - $ 3.7 in October to $ 1.2 in November. Keep in mind that Adsense revenue is countable only if you have a minimum of 500 daily visitors to your blog.
3. Technorati authority
Your Technorati authority climbed to 5 from 3 in two months. Everyday you spend 30 minutes or more analyzing that numbers. It is really an energy-draining task to obsess over at Technorati back link count.
4. Feedburner statistics
Oh, I have only 6 readers. Let me check where they all come from. One look at the Feedburner count is enough and you need not spend a second analyzing that number.
5. Affiliate programs
Oh, here I have one wonderful affiliate program that can make me big money through my blog. Wrong! Newbie bloggers signup for all the affiliate programs they come across and end up dejected. Using Amazon, CJ and ClickBank is fine. More than that is a waste of time.
Checking statistics and trying out new things are necessary. However, letting them take over most of blogging time negatively affects your productivity and can even prevent you from enjoying your blogging activity.
