Social Bookmarking. Would you be EXTREMELY pleased if in one day, you get 10,000 visitors to your blog? Wow. Let me tell you, it IS POSSIBLE and it happened before... and not to some popular 2-year old blog or website but it can happen to your blog or my blog which may be only 1 or 2 months' old!!
So, you might think, come on... surely you are PAYING for your traffic! Nope... who says I am talking about paid traffic to your blog. Then... you might say, get many sites to link to your blog (backlink), perform keyword research to rank high on the search engines or get more subscribers to your blog via RSS or email... YES... no doubt all these methods can give you the traffic and they work.
But, the question is, how do you build traffic in the early days when nobody knows about you or your blog? Like many new blogs, traffic is primarily driven by friends that you send emails to asking them to "Hey, check out my new blog or post!". You keep writing articles after articles to keep your blog going, and you are getting a consistent 10-50 visitors a day...This is where I am going to talk about Social Bookmarking Networks.
Haiz... i know about this already... ok... yes. Before you jump off to another article... let me interest you to the Social Bookmarking IMPORTANCE that may, can and will give you the 10,000 visitors that you are craving for. Read on...
A quick overview on Social Bookmarking: Social sites like Digg and reddit are basically community-driven, link-sharing sites. Members of the community submit links to articles and content that they find interesting. Hundreds of articles get submitted to these sites everyday. Once a link is submitted, the community gets to "vote" on which articles they like or find interesting. If someone posts a link to your blog article on one of these sites and it rises to the front page (because the community liked it), it can mean thousands of visitors to your blog in a single day!
Hey... do not despair... you are on the right track. It is not easy to get to the front page of these social sites. There is a lot of competition. But, at least you have a chance. How to get your blog article to rise to the front page of the social network and you get a SPIKE of 10,000 visitors in a day?
1. Write great content on topics that lots of people care about. Provide value to your readers by being interesting, honest and opinionated sharing your experiences.
2. Write great article titles. This is very important because titles have a strong influence on whether your articles will get read or get voted up or not.
3. Experiment writing your blog post and submitting to social sites at particular "high traffic" times of the day. You realize that some times are better than others to post (i.e. 11.00 a.m. ET is the best time for some social sites).
4. Make it easy for your readers to submit your articles to popular social sites. Provide links like "submit to reddit" link on all your articles. Just like my blog, you could install the Share This Wordpress plugin which you can download from alexking.org.
Like many new initiatives, blogging comes down to a combination of constant experimentation and determination. You have to try a lot of things to figure out what works. And you have to stick with it LONG ENOUGH to give it a chance to work.
So, do not give up... next time you write your blog articles, do not forget to submit your articles to social bookmarking sites!
