Email is such an integral part of our lives now, that many of us cannot imagine how we ever got along without it. So here are a bunch of things to do, not do, and keep in mind as we use this wonderful, maddening essential tool we call email.
Always sign out properly from your email account. Do not just click the little "X" in the upper right corner. Yes, this will indeed appear to close your email client, or program. But your account may still be active. The next user of your computer could click on your shortcut or icon to that program, and find themselves right back in your account.
If you use a public or shared computer, never step away from your PC while your email account is open. Also, do not use your main email account to sign up for stuff unless it is from a trusted, respected source. Get a fr ee web-based email account from Yahoo! Windows Live (Hotmail) or Gmail. Do not believe email Subject Lines that claim "You requested this". Chances are, you did not.
Here is something I hope everyone knows by now. If you are sending a message to a list of people, but you do not want each recipient to see who the other recipients are (or their email addresses), do this: In the To: box, put your own address to another of your mailboxes. Then put all the real addresses in the Bcc (Blind carbon copy) box. Each addressee will get the email with your address in the From: field, but will not see the multiple addresses. Go to that other mailbox of yours, to confirm the email has been sent in the proper form.
When mailing to a group, it is considered common courtesy to use Bcc. The email looks neater and easier to read. And the recipients cannot see any of the email addresses.
Ever had this happen to you in Outlook Express (OE)? Your list of Folders on the left-hand side of the screen suddenly goes missing in action. Do not tear your hair out; the solution is simple. See that word Inbox on the upper left, with the tiny down arrow next to it? Click it, and your Folders will reappear! BUT, you must now click the little push-pin in the Folders window, or they will soon disappear again.
You should change your OE password regularly, just as you change all your other passwords (I hope!). Yes, there is a password in OE, even if you have the program set to remember it and you completely forgot all about it. In principle, you could change your password by clicking File, Identities, Manage Identities, Properties. Click Change Password. Or you may have to click the box Require a password then click Change Password.
However, this can be a tricky business, and you could lose OE entirely. So your best bet is to call your Internet Service Provider and have them help you with this change.
To surf the Web more safely and securely, get The Cloak to set up a proxy for you. A proxy server sits between you and the Internet. Web sites you visit through the proxy will think the proxy server is your home computer, and will be unable to see any of your own information. For example, Web sites will attempt to put cookies on the proxy, not on your computer. Go here to set it up: http://www.the-cloak.com/anonymous-surfing-home.html
Finally, if you want to find someone's email address, just plug their name into your favorite search engine. If that does not work, add any other information you may have, such as their physical address, profession, etc.
