4 Easy List-Building Tips

by Boris Mahovac

My first article on list building is titled List-Building - 5 Secret Strategies You Can Apply Today. Now, I present to you four more tips on growing your list that should work for almost any type of businesses.
You can use these without spending anything, however, free will only get you so far, so consider paid options as well. F=free, P=paid
1. Write articles and submit them to article directories If you are already publishing your newsletter or ezine, you have articles. You can write them yourself, or have them written by a freelance copywriter (see elance.com and similar sites). Distribute your articles to article directories. These are mostly free web sites that accept articles on many different topics. I have an in-depth article on article writing available on my web site.
How does article writing benefit you? In your article you are allowed to place links to your web site. All article directories allow so-called resource boxes, but some also allow links within the body of the article. A resource box is usually placed at the end of your article, and you can include your name, business name and any offer to entice readers to sign up to your list.
2. Submit your ezine to ezine directories There are a number of these services available on the net, the one I recommend is New-List.com (F). These directories will show your ezine description or ad to anyone looking for information on a given subject. Another good spot to look is DirectoryOfEzines.com (P)
3. Co-registration joint ventures and service providers With co-registration, you advertise your ezine along one or more other advertisers. A prospect can then sign up for one or more ezines at the same time.
You can set this up as a joint venture (F) with one or more ezine publishers or use a co-registration service (P).
If you go the JV route, you will have to set up a custom script on your own web server, and your JV partners would do the same. There are many options available to you, simply search the web, or have your web master set it up.
If you're not technically inclined, or do not have the time to look for JV partners, I recommend you use a co-reg service. In a day or two you can add hundreds of new subscribers to your list!
Simply put, you sign up with a service provider who then places your ezine ad on their web site. You sign up to buy a certain number of subscribers. I use Co-RegListBuilder.com and GetSubscribers (the latter only works with GetResponse, a highly-recommended auto-responder and Email Publishing Service).
4. Classified and display ads in print media This is an off line method of building your list, but you will be driving traffic to your web site, where your prospects can sign up. You will achieve best results if you can find a newspaper or magazine whose readership is your target market. For example, if you were a matchmaker you'd place a classified ad in the "Personals" section of your local newspaper.
Bonus tip: Start small (i.e. cheap) to polish your ad, then work up to display ads which are more expensive.
Make sure you track the effectiveness of each of these marketing techniques. I recommend you use ad-tracking software, which allows you to assign a unique "ID" to each article, listing, or classified ad. This way you will be able to track your subscribers, see where they are coming from, how many are converting to clients, etc. This kind of information can help you eliminate marketing strategies that do not work, so that you can concentrate your efforts on the ones that do.
If you'd like to add ad-tracking features to your existing Email Publishing System, I recommend HyperTracker.
